Welcome in – Welcoming migrants through conversation

Welcome in (Fáilte Isteach) is an Irish community project involving mostly older volunteers welcoming migrants and refugees through conversational English classes for free. They provide language skills to migrants in a welcoming and inclusive manner. This volunteering project promotes easier integration by creating new friendships and facilitating learning among different cultures.

It started in 2006 by Third Age organization in response to daily difficulties that new migrants were experiencing in the process of integration into the local community through a poor understanding or lack of English.

The project breaks down the barriers that migrants and communities face by offering friendship and goodwill in a practical, welcoming and inclusive way. Welcome in movement provides more than just the transfer of skills and knowledge. It is making a positive difference to everyone involved.

Every week approximately 4.500 persons are positively impacted by Welcome in, with over 1.500 volunteers, mostly older people, offering conversation classes to migrants from over 75 countries.
