In Łódź, a city located in central Poland, an unusual initiative has been created in which senior citizens break stereotypes and unite generations through hip-hop dance.

This is possible, among other things, thanks to the projects ‘Shake up Łódź to the rhythm of hip hop’ (Seniors in Action programme) and ‘Luzaki Senioraki – promoting hip-hop culture 60+’ (with support from the City of Łódź budget), which support the activation of older people and promote intergenerational cooperation.
A group of senior citizens, known as ‘Yoł Yoł Seniorzy’, operating under the Regional Volunteer Centre ‘Centerko’, participated in an intensive dance workshop, where they learnt basic hip-hop steps and dance routines, which were then presented at community centres and youth centres.
This initiative not only aroused the enthusiasm of the participants, but also inspired the younger generations to dialogue and exchange experiences. Dance gatherings are not only an opportunity for physical activity, but also for integration, bringing hip-hop culture closer and building bonds between generations. Through such actions, senior citizens show that age is not a barrier and that passion and openness can surprise and inspire others.

Such activities prove that being active at any age can be unique and energetic, while enriching the local community.
What is very significant is that the “Yoł Yoł Seniorzy” group still regularly practises choreography together and participates in many non-local initiatives, infecting the community with positivity and joy!
